I don't know about you, but I have some pretty bad habits. Lately, one particular habit's been getting worse. This one:

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

I think the summary from Goodreads does a great job summing up this novel:

The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed. But Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves--Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

There's something about Stephenie Meyer's writing that makes her books incredibly hard to put down. The world she's built is this novel is fascinating, and I'd walk away from the book only to find myself walking back a few minutes later for "just another chapter." Yeah, right. I finished this book within a couple days.

Wanderer's thoughts on the human race were probably more accurate than I'd like to admit, and I really enjoyed reading them.

My favorite aspect of The Host was the romance. It was confusing and wonderful. Mostly confusing. For those of you who have read the book, who's your favorite, Ian or Jared? Ian for me, I think.

I would have loved to have a map of the cave in the book, but I was able to make due without one.

The ending of this book wasn't the best, in my opinion. Although I liked the way it ended, the last couple pages just didn't sit right. I've heard rumors of a sequel, and if so, that would make the ending make more sense.

As someone who hasn't read much science fiction, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed The Host. It kept me entertained and was well worth the time spent.

Something Like Fate by Susane Colasanti

Lani and Erin are complete opposites, yet they're also best friends. Lately, Lani hasn't been hanging out with the same group so much, and she feels as if they're sort growing apart. Little does she know when Erin starts to date Jason that something will happen that could tear them apart forever.

As someone who's been brought up to think that horoscopes, tarot cards, and palm readings are nothing but bunches of hog wash, it was really interesting to read about Lani's exploits in that area. After all, who's to say it's completely impossible?

Lani's voice is an accurate portrayal of many teen girls I know, and the dialogue in this book is something I can imagine actually taking place. She even has an irritating way of saying "like" too much. That's a habit I'm trying to break myself of right now!

I didn't really like Erin that much. She's very melodramatic and sometimes just plain mean. Jason was nice enough, although I wasn't completely smitten with him. Sometimes I felt he was a bit cowardly about some things. I think I would have liked him a bit more if he'd been a little braver. Conner was the boy that I ended up really liking. He was sweet and funny and did whatever he could to help Lani. Blake, Lani's friend who's gay, has a lot of strength. I would love to have a friend like him.

In the end, this book addresses the issue of just how far loyalty should go between friends. Do you keep the boy and lose the friend, or lose the boy and hope you keep the friend? Or maybe just do what you can then leave it up to fate.

One Year Ago Today

I've always liked the Blogoversary buttons, but a few days ago I looked at it and realized it had malfunctioned. I'm not sure what happened, but I know thiss blog's anniversary is today, not a few months from now, so the friendly widget had to go bye-bye.

Alas, lamenting the loss of the widget is not the purpose of this post!

365 days ago, I started this blog. And I'm still here! Thanks to everyone who's stopped by, and here's to another successful and, most importantly, fun year.

Scribbler of Dreams by Mary E. Pearson

Kaitlin Malone hates the Crutchfields. For all her life, she's been told that the Crutchfields are at fault for all the Malone's problems.

She and her sister are forced to attend a public school since the Malones can no longer afford the tuition to the private school they normally attend. There Kait meets a boy. During lunch, Bram draws while she writes. She finds herself falling for him. Then she realizes that he's a Crutchfield.

The title was the first thing that attracted me to this book. I wanted to know more about Scribbler of Dreams immediately. As well as attracting me to the book, it also turned out to be a perfect fit.

The hate between the two families is very similar to the play Romeo and Juliet. I learned this by reading the summary on Amazon, and I was anxious to see whether or not Kait and Bram would meet the same fate.

Scribbler of Dreams was a book I couldn't put down. I found myself trying to focus on something (namely, schoolwork), only to end up being distracted by my thoughts on the book, giving in to read just one more chapter. Of course, things didn't turn out that way, and I finished this book within a few hours. It was certainly worth the time spent.

1st In A Series Challenge

1st in a Series challenge is hosted by Royal Reviews. I've decided to join up on the "fascinated" level and hopefully read six books by the end of the year that are (You guessed it!) first in a series.

I'm a huge fan of The Luxe and Rumors (click the links to read my reviews), the first two books in The Luxe series. Envy was sadly disappointing for me, but I've got a copy of Splendor on its way to me! The way I see it, by the time I read Splendor, there'll be just enough time to eagerly anticipate Bright Young Things* release, which is October 26.

I'm a huge fan of historical fiction, but I've never read any set in the 1920s. It sounds great!

Post Grad starring Alexis Bledel

Ryden Malby had it all figured out. Make good grades in high school, get a great college scholarship, keep the scholarship, graduate, and then work at the best publishing company in LA. Only things don't go quite as she planned. Instead of getting the job, she ends up unemployed and living with her crazy family once again.

Crazy is NOT an understatement.

Add on to that, a hot Brazillian neighbor and Adam, a guy who's been her best friend since freshman year, yet wants to be more. That's the plot.

The plot, while all over the place, works well for this movie. You're not sure what scheme one of the Malbys will come up with next. Will it be her father's plan to make a fortune online selling belt buckles or perhaps her grandmother (played by the ever amazing Carol Burnett) wanting to take a look at caskets? There's always something going on, with Ryden and her love life, or lack thereof, at the center of it all.

Post Grad* definitely takes you for a ride. One that I really enjoyed.

Loving Mr. Darcy by Sharon Lathan

If you haven't read Pride and Prejudice, or watched one of the movie adaptations, this review contains spoilers.

Six months into their marriage, things are going grandly for the Darcys. Elizabeth and William are just as enamored with each other as ever. Soon, Lizzy realizes something absolutely wonderful.

In Loving Mr. Darcy, readers are introduced to some new characters in the Darcy's lives. These characters definitely add some liveliness into the mix, especially Dr. George Darcy. He has just returned from India in the beginning of the book, and he's quite an eccentric!

My favorite aspect of this book is the historical detail. Much was included about England's state at the time, and as a history buff, I enjoyed it. Those sections were delightful.

This book is atypical in the fact that there's really not an overall conflict that spans the book. I knew this, as well as the fact that this saga is a happily-ever-after type tale, going in from reading the FAQ on Sharon Lathan's website. Still, it was a little hard, at times, to stay into the novel, but those times were far between.

Readers should be aware that this book, like its predecessor Mr. & Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy, has several sex scenes in it. I personally felt that nothing would have been lost if a couple of those scenes had been cut from the novel, since at times it seems to overwhelm the book.

One of my favorite parts of the book is when Mary Bennet catches Joshua Daniel's eye. I've always liked her, and that chapter was thrilling, in a shy, sweet sort of way.

Loving Mr. Darcy, and this saga overall, is a great read for Pride and Prejudice lovers, especially those who loved the 2005 movie adaptation.

Hi guys and gals! Today, I have an interview with Estevan Vega, author of Arson. Hope you enjoy!

Can you start a fire with only sticks?

Haha. I am probably the most campfire challenged person you'd know. I'm not crazy into the whole idea of sleeping under the stars with spiders and various rodents skulking about. But I usually stick with matches or the occasional Zippo. Or, you know, I just get Arson to do it.

If you had the ability to create either fire or ice with your mind, which would you choose?

Man, that's a hard one. I mean I saw X-Men and Ice Man won the fight against Pyro, so maybe ice would be a cool power. I mean, you wouldn't ever get pneumonia probably, and if, by the rare and ridiculous chance I had a craving to climb mount Everest, I'd be set for sure. I could hang around with any sub-zero temperature female and it wouldn't bother me. And I wonder if ice-starters get colds or sore throats or whatever. Hmmm...All in all...I'd probably still go with fire.

If a fire were to start where you live, what would you grab on your way out of the building?

My computer, because it probably has a bunch of stuff on it that I would need, like future books or ideas for books, short stories, lyrics or poetry, and a crapload of music and movies. My wallet, because I wouldn't want the hassle of going to the DMV or getting new credit cards. Man, I wish I had more valuable stuff. This makes me seem lame.

Would you rather be inside with a fire going in the fireplace or outside with a fire going?

It all depends on the night. I mean, on a cold, wintry night, I love sitting by the fire, very author-ly, of course, with my legs crossed and a seriously cool countenance. But I also love sitting around a fire outside on a summer or fall night. S'mores definitely rock. I love the way the fire feels on my face when I'm a few feet away, or having conversations that in the middle of you start to tear for no other reason than the heat. It's crazy. But also kinda cool. I think as long as people are around I'm down for either. But if I had to choose which is better, probably the outside fire...so long as no brawls ensue.

Where do you see yourself as an author in five years?

Oh, man, this question is dangerous. It's one of those things you fear to answer wondering if anything you plan will actually happen. In five years I'll be 26, and close to checking into the old-folks home. I mean, I would've already been given my first cane, for heaven's sake. I'll only have a few decent years left before senility. Honestly, I hope to make the best-seller list, any of them will do. I think I'd like to be married and just loving my wife, not worrying about stupid bills like my family. It would rock to get a movie deal too. But I think more than these things, I'd like to see my family go back to how it used to be...before the massive amounts of dysfunction. Well, sorta.

Sweethearts by Sara Zarr

I went into this book with all the wrong expectations. I was thinking that it would be fairly predictable with Jenna and Cameron falling in love and living happily ever after, or they would find out that they were too different and go on seperate paths, never to meet again. Sweet, fun, and predictable. Shows how much I know.

Since I went into this book expecting a different type of book, it took me a few chapters to get into Sweethearts. There were parts of this book that felt slow to me. I'm not sure why, since events in this book happen fairly quickly. However, the farther along I got in this book, the more engrossed I became.

Jenna and Cameron's bond runs deep. It's hard to explain to others. In fact, Jenna has a hard time understanding it herself. It's intriguing to watch their relationship. As Jenna thinks of bits of their past, it becomes easier to realize what holds them together so strongly.

As Jenna grows as a character, the writing becomes more lyrical. Through the final chapters of the book, it was amazing. Sweethearts houses one of my all time favorite quotes now. The kind that sort of makes you want to laugh and sort of makes you want to cry.

Although Once Was Lost is my favorite of the two books I've read by Sara Zarr thus far (I have a copy of Story of A Girl on its way!), Sweethearts was a worthwhile read with one of the most gorgeous endings I've ever read.

Waiting On Wednesday

I wasn't able to find a cover for this one, but I was absolutely hooked when I saw that it was a retelling of Jane Eyre! I read that book a couple years ago and really enjoyed it, although I'm sketchy on some of the details.

The DUFF: (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) by Kody Keplinger

Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn't think she's the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She's also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her "Duffy," she throws her Coke in his face.

But things aren't so great at home right now. Desperate for a distraction, Bianca ends up kissing Wesley. And likes it. Eager for escape, she throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with Wesley.

Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out that Wesley isn't such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she's falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

Doesn't Bianca sound feirce? The whole concept of this book grabbed my attention.

Both of these books are coming out from Little Brown, and the author's are both debut authors!

They're gonna be great.

Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers

Regina is part of the high school elite. You know the type. When you see them in the hallway, you either avert your eyes, hoping they don't see you, or look at them with envy and admiration. Or at least she was.

There's been a freeze-out, and now she's all alone on the outside. Her former "friends" are bent on making her life miserable. They're succeeding.

I'm still not sure how I feel about Regina. On the one hand, nobody deserves the hell she puts up with. On the other, you know that she's been guilty of doing the same exact things to people.

I knew exactly how I felt about her friends, though. They were absolutely horrible! Yet they're portrayed in such a way that sort of makes you feel sorry for them. Only sort of.

Some Girls Are* went by really, really quickly for me. It's one of those books I felt sad about finishing because it was that good. Thankfully, I have Cracked Up to Be* on my TBR pile, and I'm looking forward to delving into more of Summer's writing.

First Rate Friday

Why hello there, lovely person.

First Rate Fridays is a meme hosted by He Followed Me Home. The purpose is to showcase some of the coolest book posts you've come across in the past week. Here are a few of my faves:

I was googling for historical fiction, and I found a great list on Rebecca's Book Blog that's full of books set in the Tudor era. My wishlist is longer.

There's this awesome post entitled "Young Love & All That Jazz" on Maggie Stiefvater's blog that had a contented sigh slipping out of my mouth.

And Forever Young Adult has a post showcasing The Most Swoonworthy YA Couples of All Time. Carrots.

Last weekend, my parents and I took a weekend trip to Natchez, MS. It was awesome! A few of my favorite pictures (click to enlarge):

Over a decade ago, Jake broke Katie's heart. He left and didn't say goodbye. Now, he's a huge recording star, and his most famous songs have been about her. She vows that when she gets the chance, she'll make him pay. That time has come, if she has the nerve to follow through. But things are never that simple.

What kind of guy does that? Right away I was sure I was going to have issues with this guy, but it didn't turn out that way. Each chapter alternates between what's currently going on in Katie's life, then going back to sometime in her past. Those chapters about her past made me really, really like Jake. He seemed so awesome. Then I'd remember what he had done and be angry at him all over again. I definitely had a love-hate relationship going on.

I wasn't sure how I wanted it to end, but once I finished it, I think it was the best ending, under the circumstances. Dedication* is one book I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel to.

And if I've heard correctly, the authors of the book are working on a screenplay! That's something I'd definitely like to see.

This book only took a few hours, and they were well spent. It's an entertaining read that keeps you guessing, in a good way.

Magic Study by Maria V. Snyder

Yelena has gone to Sitia in order to flee from the execution order against her in Ixia , meet her family, and learn about her abilities as a magician

But once she gets to Sitia she learns that she can't control her power as much as she should, her brother seems to hate her, and finds herself missing her northern friends.

Danger finds her once again, and Yelena must once again fight to survive, only this time, the stakes are even higher.

First off, I would like to take a moment to swoon over Valek. I couldn't figure out how to in my Poison Study review without spoiling that part of that story. Feel free to join me. 1,2,3...

I'm so glad to be able to get that out of my system.

Oftentimes while reading this book, I didn't know whether to praise Yelena for her bravery or be mad at her for her brash actions. She's impulsive, often doing things without fully weighing the consquences of her deeds. Sometimes I wanted her to slow down and just think for a few minutes, but if she had, this book wouldn't have been nearly as interesting.

With an entirely new environment comes a lot of new characters, many of whom I really enjoyed, especially the horses. Yelena, using her magic, is able to speak to horses, and I absolutely loved reading her conversations with them.

The pace in this book moves along well, and it had my interest the entire time. I certainly didn't see all of the twists and turns coming. I really liked 'em.

Magic Study was a fantastic read. Maybe not quite as enthralling for me as Poison Study but pretty darn close. I can't wait to dive into Fire Study!

Murder, mayhem and magic...

Locked in a coffin-like darkness, there is nothing to distract me from my memories of killing Reyad. He deserved to die—but according to the law, so do I. Here in Ixia, the punishment for murder is death. And now I wait for the hangman's noose.

But the same law that condemns me may also save me. Ixia's food taster—chosen to ensure that the Commander's food is not poisoned—has died. And by law, the next prisoner who is scheduled to be executed—me—must be offered the position.

Yelena is an amazing main character. As she talked about her past, she showed me that she was willing to do whatever it took to save others and herself, a trait which I greatly admire. She has guts, for lack of a better word, and she'll only take so much ill treatment before she takes action herself.

The characters that surround Yelena were awesome as well. I couldn't get enough of Ari and Janco. Talk about perfect older brother material! In the beginning, I really liked Rand as well. A guy who can cook is total win! Valek was another intriguing character. I wasn't quite sure what to think of him at first, but I warmed up to him after a bit. My attitude towards him mirrored Yelena's almost exactly.

The plot in this book is always jumping. Poison Study is one of those books that I absolutely could not put down. It kept me riveted the entire time.

The ending! The ending of this book resolved enough to leave me satisfied, but it also had me rushing out to the bookstore at the very next available opportunity to get a copy of the next book in the series, Magic Study*. A review of it will be coming soon.

The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

Bailey was the star. She dazzled everyone, but now she's dead. Lennie, Bailey's sister and best friend, suddenly finds herself smack in the middle of a drama that rivals even the most dramatic stories Bailey shared with her.

Two boys. One who makes Lennie forget of her grief, the other who seems to be the only one who understands.

I found myself rooting for Lennie again and again, even when she did some pretty stupid things. The poetry she wrote was absolutely fabulous and probably my favorite part of the novel. She's so talented. A great poet and an incredibly gifted clarinetest, although she doesn't see herself that way.

And Joe. Joe was so awesome. I love one of Lennie's observations of him when she first meets him.

The guy looks unabashedly jack-o'-lantern happy which couldn't be more foreign to the sullen demeanor most of us strove to perfect. (From an ARC. May differ from final version.)

To me, that's very easy to picture in my mind. It's like a moth to a light. You can't help but be attracted.

Not to say that Toby and Lennie together wasn't absolutely intriguing. While Joe and Lennie's relationship makes Lennie seemingly forget about the grief that haunts her, allowing her to be happy, at least for a little while, Toby really does understand, and their relationship often comes across as darker and more seductive. Still, I definitely knew who I was rooting for!

The supporting cast of characters were great, as well. I think Uncle Big was my favorite character, after the three mentioned above. So odd and different. Sarah, "the most enthusiastic cynical person on the planet," was a pretty great friend to Lennie, and I loved her.

The Sky Is Everywhere* is a great debut novel, and I can't wait for more books by Jandy Nelson!

I just recently came upon this novel while browsing goodreads, and it sounds like a great story! What would you do if you were not sure if you would get a heart you desperately needed to survive? It comes out in April.

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
You should all go check out this author's blog: Natural/Artificial. I think it's great. Sandy introduced me to it. Here's what the book's about:

It's about a girl. It's about a boy. It's about Parisian boarding school, almond-scented macaroons, famous cemeteries, and cinemaphiles. It's about heartache. And it's about true love.

How am I supposed to wait until December? December??

Everlasting by Angie Frazier

I think this is one of the prettiest covers I've seen to date. And it's a historical! Love it. Comes out on June 1st.

Losing Faith by Denise Jaden

The premise behind this book is very intriguing to me. Death. And cults. Sounds compelling! It's out on September 7th.

Sea by Heidi R. Kling

The setting of this book, post-tsunami Indonesia, is definitely one of the first things that drew me to this book. I found out about Sea after following the author on twitter, @HeidiRKling. You should go follow her too! Bunches of fun. Coming in June!

A long time ago in fifth grade (which was actually not that long ago) I came across a book called Elizabeth I: Red Rose of The House Of Tudor, England 1544 which was a part of The Royal Diaries series by Kathryn Lasky. In the back of that book, there were a couple pages showing all of King Henry's wives. I was fascinated. He had six wives! Six! I remember wanting to know more about his wives, but I never looked into it. Within a couple months I had forgotten.

Then, a few months ago, I heard about The King's Rose, a historical fiction account about his fourth wive, Catherine Howard. I knew that I definitely wanted to read it, and when the chance came to review it as part of a Traveling to Teens tour, I was very excited.

At first, I had a bit of trouble getting into this novel. There are a lot of characters introduced quite quickly, and it took me a couple chapters before I could get everyone straight in my head.

Once I had that figured out, I absolutely loved it!

Catherine is aquite captivating. She has the classic case of wanting that one thing that you can't have, despite the fact you have everything else. Yet I couldn't quite fault her for it. What she wanted was such a common thing for a girl her age to want, an all consuming love.

Which brings me to another fact that intrigued me about Catherine; her age. She was only fifteen when she married the king. I'M fifteen, and I can't even imagine getting married, let alone to a king. I know that in that time period, it wasn't such an odd thing to get married young, but it still amazed me. To be put in such a position at such a young age, that had to be such a heady experience.

All the other characters in this book were intriguing to read about as well, especially Catherine's family. By the end of the book, I really wanted to have at the duchess.

The ending of this book was fabulous. Although I obviously wasn't a fan of what happened, the writing was amazing. It's one of those endings that you spend the next few days thinking about. I loved it.

The King's Rose is a book I heartily recommend for historical fiction lovers.

As part of a Traveling to Teens tour, I had the opportunity to interview Alisa Libby, author of The Blood Confession and The King's Rose. Hope you enjoy!

You listen to David Bowie a lot. What's your favorite song of his?
The answer completely depends on my mood. If I need a shot of adrenaline, perhaps before a signing or book talk, I'll listen to “Blackout” or “Putting out Fire”. Or “Suffragette City” or “Rebel Rebel”. If I'm getting ready to write I'll listen to his Heathen album. I also love “Life on Mars”. So yes, it's a difficult question to answer! His Bowie at the Beeb album is among my absolute favorites.

What are you working on now?
I have a few works-in-progress at the moment. I'm taking a break from historical fiction to write some contemporary, magical-real fiction. I love historical fiction, but I just couldn't imagine starting all of that research again! If I'm truly in love with a character, then the research is fun...otherwise, it's drudgery. So I'm having fun writing about characters who wear jeans and sweaters and live in a world pretty much like places I've visited. It's liberating to be able to focus on the character and the plot and not have to worry about researching what she would be eating and what her clothes would look like.

What's your favorite type of ice cream?
Like Bowie songs, it's difficult for me to pick a favorite. Mint chocolate chip. And anything with chocolate and peanut butter. Yum.

I'm definitely with you on chocolate and peanut butter!

You like sheep. What is there to love about sheep?
What's not to love about sheep? They're round and have funny faces and walk around wearing wool sweaters all the time. I don't know if you've ever heard sheep “talk” to one another, but it is hilarious. My husband and I witnessed this while traveling in Scotland, years ago: we heard two sheep baaa-ing at each other, really loudly, clearly having a conversation. They sounded like an irritated elderly couple lost in a parking lot.

Awww, that sounds cute.

What do you love most about writing historicals?
Well, I did just complain a little bit about research earlier...but I loved visiting a time period like Tudor England, that is just so rich with amazing details, things that I never would created on my own. The food they ate, the elaborate clothes, their celebrations and banquets, the music they danced to, their customs and beliefs that seem so strange to us today. Not to mention the people who populated King Henry's court – each one more brilliant and conniving and crazy than the last. And imagine, if someone wrote a novel about a king who had a total of six wives, divorced two and executed another two, wouldn't it seem a bit far-fetched? History is filled with these over-the-top personalities. And for all of his tyrannical tendencies, King Henry really did know how to throw a great party.

Oblivion Road by Alex McAulay

On their way home from a ski trip, Courtney and her friends get in a bad wreck on an isolated road just as a blizzard descends. Though hurt, they're all alive... For now.

Dun. Dun. Dun.

It probably took about fifty pages for me to really get into the book, but once I got invested in the lives of the characters, I was insanely curious as to how it would end.

As a pretty squeamish person (I'm not the one you want beside you if you're bleeding), some of the descriptions of blood and whatnot had me squirming. For example, on page 92:

Without looking down, Courtney probed deeper. It was spongy and warm inside. She tried to tell herself she wasn't feeling the insides of a human body, but it didn't work.

That, and the next few lines following, put a grimace on my face.

Knowing that things could change at any second and that these people are in a literal life and death situation kept me on the edge of my seat. Would they all survive? All die? Why can't I read faster??

The tag line of this book is right on: Sometimes the will to survive is the scariest thing of all.

At 176 pages, Start Here is a very quick read, but within those pages, there is a lot to digest. It's quite easy to fly through, but you'll get more out of it if you take your time.

It's a greatly inspirational book and answers practically every question one could have about how to start on a quest to do hard things, big or small, as well as the ramifications such actions can have.

There lots of stories thrown in which breaks the book up nicely, making it quite easy to read. Start Here is a good book with a great message, and it's one that I definitely recommend.

Swoon at Your Own Risk by Sydney Salter

Polly's summer is sure to be dramatic. She's sworn off boys since her junior was horrible when it came to romance.

It'll be bad enough working with ex #3, Sawyer, at a water park for kids. It seemed like a good idea at the time, just like learning all about cars for Kurt, going hiking over spring break with Gareth, or running for student council for Hayden. However, the near constant presence of her suddenly hot neighbor at the water park makes it hard for her to keep up her resolve.

Swoon at Your Own Risk is a quick, amusing read. Watching Polly weave in and out of a number of problems was quite entertaining.

She has boys on her mind a rather large majority of the time, even though she's sworn off romance. It's hard to get a guy off your mind if you he keeps showing up everywhere! It's obvious that all of her romances thus far have ended badly, and I definitely couldn't blame her for wanting to throw in the towel.

My favorite character in this book was Xander. He was a guy that Polly had known for forever, yet seemingly overnight he’d grown hot. She remembers him from when he used to lick desks. I can relate to this! There are a few guys I can think of that have gone through a seemingly instant metamorphis and had me wondering what happened to the awkward kid I knew in elementary school.

Polly spends a large amount of time trying to be perfect for everyone else, and dealing with the important issue of being your true self lends this book a bit of seriousness that made me like it even more. Sometimes I wanted to shake Polly, and tell her to just be herself, but that's a lot easier said than done.

Swoon at Your Own Risk is definitely worth a read.

New Moon Movie Review

I wrote this review right after the movie came out, stuck it in my review folder, then managed to promptly forget it existed. I found it a few days ago and thought now would be a good time to post it with the upcoming DVD release. Spoilers if you haven't read/watched Twilight.

I'm a fan of the Twilight Saga. Not a raving mad fan, but a fan, nonetheless. And I'm happy to say that I liked this movie. A lot.

New Moon made me laugh often, in a good way. There were plenty of moments stuck here and there that kept the movie from being all doom and despair and angst. It surprised me with how close it stuck to the novel. Of course, not everything was the same, but it was very close to the book.

This movie wasn't completely perfect for me, though. There was a couple times during the movie where the cinematography made me dizzy, and there were also a few moments when I was rolling my eyes. Thankfully those didn't occur too often.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. Getting to know the pack on screen was awesome, as was seeing everyone else again. And since it's probably my favorite book in the saga, it was great to see it translated so well onto screen.

The Unwritten Rule by Elizabeth Scott

Sarah has liked Ryan for a long time. Years, in fact. But that doesn't matter anymore. He's now her best friend's boyfriend. And it's torture. Then, one night, things happen between Ryan and Sarah. It's bliss, but it might not be worth the damage that follows. Will it?

Elizabeth Scott has delivered another awesome book. The Unwritten Rule is smart, heartbreaking, and greatly realistic. While I, quite thankfully, have never been caught in Sarah's predicament, it is certainly one I've seen acted out to one degree or another within the relationships of teenagers around me. It's not pretty.

Before I read the book, I have to admit that I was predisposed to Brianna's (Sarah's best friend) side of things. After all, she did get him first, and no matter what Sarah's feelings may be, rules must be followed. Especially ones like keeping away from people's boyfriends. However, within a couple chapters, I was on Sarah's side almost one hundred percent. By the end of the book, I don't think anything could have gotten me off of her side.

With the suspense tied into this book, I couldn't put it down. And all too soon, within just a few hours, I had finished the book. I couldn't get enough and soon found myself flipping through my favorite passages a couple more times. This is one of those books that is a complete blast to read! I heartily recommend.

I just started this book, and it's very intriguing thus far! I'm very much looking forward to the rest of the book.

Hear No Evil by Matthew Paul Turner

Hear No Evil: My Story of Innocence, Music, and the Holy Ghost is a compilation of stories from Matthew Paul Turner on the influence music, particularly Christian music, has had in his life. And it is hilarious. Definitely one of the funniest books I've read in quite a while.

The greatest thing about this book, is the amount of stories that are easily relatable. Like this:

Seeing people from church in places other than church excited me. It was similar to going bird-watching on a nature trail, and then, among all the sparrows, crows, robins, wrens, and starlings that blended into nature's background, sighting an emu.

That is so true.

The first part of the book, the stories of Turner's upbringing in an Independent Fundamental Baptist Church was by far my favorite part of the book and contained the stories that I could relate to the most. But the book goes further than that, reaching intoTurner's adulthood. And while I, as a teenager, obviously couldn't relate to as much of it, the writing and stories were still a lot of fun, though sometimes with a bit more serious tone.

This book is a perfect read for people who are willing to laugh at the ridiculousness that is sometimes encompassed in Christianity. And a great read for all music lovers, Christian or not.

Hear No Evil is a grand read and has me very interested in picking up another book by this author, Churched.

My first thought when I finished reading the summary was:

Woo! Love triangle!

My second thought was:

What the heck does "swashbuckling" mean?

Sing Me to Sleep Book Trailer

When I finished, I went over the ending again and again in my mind, trying to sort through my feelings over it. It is a captivating story with characters that you can't help but feel for.

That said, it wasn't a perfect book. There's so much going on. Beth's romance with Derek, singing, her relationship with her mother, Scott, and her self confidence. Some things didn't have as much of an ending as I would have liked, especially Beth finding peace within herself.

However, that was basically the only qualm I had with this book. It's a lovely story with strong yet completely human characters. One that made me smile, then feel like I wanted to cry.

Sing Me to Sleep by Angela Morrison will be released on March 4th by Razorbill.

The Life of Glass by Jillian Cantor

A part of the summary on Goodreads says, "This is a lyrical tale of love, loss and self-discovery." Doesn't that sound beautiful?

Dirty Little Secrets by C.J. Omololu has an intriguing concept! Secrets are always tough to keep, and when they come out, something interesting always happens.

Hard to Get by Emma Carlson Berne is a Simon Pulse Romantic Comedy. I've read a few of these recently, and they're really cute!

After by Kristin Harmel has a lovely summary. However, if you make lemonade with only lemons, it's going to be pretty sour.

Crazy Beautiful by Lauren Baratz-Logsted

Lucius has no hands, only hooks, and it's his fault. He blew them off in an explosion of his own making. His family has moved to a new town. As he prepares for his first day at school, he knows he'll be an outcast. In some ways, he might actually prefer it.

Aurora's father insisted that they move. The old house was too full of memories. Aurora steps into this new school a little nervous and a little confident. She'll do just as her mother suggested. Smiling at everyone and giving them the benefit of the doubt.

When they meet, Aurora is one of the few people willing to look past the rumors and the hooks to see him. If only he was sure that what she saw wouldn't send her running.

First off, isn't the name Aurora gorgeous? It just sort of rolls off the tongue. I love it, and it really seems to suit her character.

The best part of this book is the way it's written in alternating viewpoints. It helped me to get a better grasp on the story, as well as get to know both main characters really well. The viewpoint alternates every chapter, and the length varies. It may be a full chapter or just a couple of paragraphs, depending on the character's mood and how much they want to talk. It worked very well.

My favorite character in the story is that of Aurora's father, Mr. Belle. He's such a kind person, the kind that you think wouldn't even hurt a fly. He's a wonderful father to Aurora, even as he struggles with the grief of his wife's death.

One common complaint I have heard about this book was the lack of details over what exactly caused Lucius to lose his hands. Although things may never have been explicitly explained, by the end of the book, I did feel as if I had a good enough grasp on what happened.

I did feel a bit uncomfortable during a conversation Lucius had with Jessup about "jerking off", and Lucius' accompanying thoughts afterwords. However, I could see the point of the conversation. And thinking back to my public school days, are there any subjects that are off-limits in the locker room?

The cover of this book is very captivating. At first, when I saw the cover online, I thought it was purely black and white. However, when I bought a copy of this book, it's easy to see that there is a bit of pink in the lettering, which really makes it pop.

In closing, I really enjoyed reading this story. It's a great modern retelling of the classic tale.

Movie Review: Belle and The Beast

Well, today's post is a bit late *sheepish smile*. This is mainly due to the fact that I had a piano lesson today, and I've had hardly any time to practice. Which is mainly due to the fact that I've been really busy with school, and I also really hate playing Sonatinas. I like listening to them, but my fingers never seem to be moving fast enough. But enough with the *cough*excuses*cough* reasons. On to the review!

Belle lives at home with her father, younger brother, and younger sister. Along with taking care of them, she also has a part-time job and attends college. Her plate is pretty full, but it's about to get even more crowded.

Eric's rich, handsome, and a jerk. When Belle's father accidentally breaks a vase while working on the fireplace in Eric's house, Eric wastes no time in telling him that he plans to get him fired for his clumsiness. Their family can't afford to not have that income coming in, so Belle takes action and becomes Eric's assistant, replacing the one Eric fired earlier in the day.

She's in for a very interesting time.

Belle and The Beast has the subtitle A Christian Romance. The subject of faith comes up a few times, but never enough to be overwhelming.

The first half of the movie, the one thought that dominated my mind was what a jerk Eric was. I mean, really!! He's self-centered and has a huge temper. Belle must have more patience than I could ever imagine having. However, as the movie progresses, it's nice to find out what Eric's reasons are. Knowing the reasons behind a person's behavior always helps.

The person that had me laughing the most in this movie was Belle's very persistent wanna-be boyfriend. He was absolutely over the top in a hilarious, oh-my-goodness-you've-got-to-be-kidding-me sort of way!

Overall, this was a pretty good movie. The ending may have been a bit too easily concluded for my liking, but it still managed to make me smile.

I’ll be the first one to admit that I’m a Disney nut. Grade A and certified. And some of you might be wondering how I got that way. Well, even I’m a little fuzzy on that, but I suppose that a lot of it has to do with the fact that I was raised on Disney. Every new year a new movie would come out and I’d have to have the latest merchandise.

When Beauty and the Beast came out in 1991, it was no different. I had to have the tights, the Barbies, the mirror, you name it, I had it. And then as usual a new movie came out the next year and I moved on to new stuff.

But somehow Beauty and the Beast was different. There was something about it, though at the young age of 4 I wasn’t quite sure what it was. In some ways I moved on, true, but a part of me still loved that movie despite my other “new favorite”.

Since then, I’ve grown up with this story. The illustrated Beauty and the Beast was the very first chapter book I was able to read by myself from start to finish. I went to see Beauty and the Beast on Ice for my 7th birthday. My first Broadway play was the theater version of Beauty and the Beast. I got Belle’s autograph at Disneyland. The list goes on and on.

I suppose one thing that kept me coming back was how much I admired Belle’s character. She was brave, smart, and not afraid to stand up to a jerk like Gaston. When I finally read the original version of the fairytale I was surprised at how bland the character of Beauty seemed. Beauty was more like other fairytale princesses I had read about, but Belle was new and vibrant. A strong female role model who still got her happily ever after in the end.

Belle taught me that it was okay to be a bookworm, even when a lot of my friends thought it was funny to be reading so much. At Disneyland, they have a building called the Animation Studio and there’s a room entitled the Beast’s Library where you can take a personality test to determine which Disney character you are most like. It wasn’t surprising to me at all when I found out I’m most like Belle.

These days, the music is the thing I love most about this movie. In fact, if you haven’t seen the Broadway version, I would highly recommend it. The songs they’ve added are my favorites these days. The production as a whole adds a whole new level of complexity to the personalities of the Beast and Belle, and they did a wonderful job adding the new music to the old familiar tunes from the movie.

No matter where I go, Beauty and the Beast will always be a special movie. Call it crazy if you want, but I still get choked up every time I hear the music. It truly is “a tale as old as time.” My time, anyway.

Beauty by Robin McKinley

The first time I heard of Beauty was when Eva from A Striped Armchair put it on her list for books she'd recommend for the Women Unbound Reading Challenge. I'm so glad I chose to read it.

Told from Beauty's perspective, the story starts when Beauty's father, a widower, loses his fortune when his entire fleet is lost. Beauty and her two sisters have been accustomed to a life of ease, so when they move to a small house in the country, they must learn to adapt.

After some time, her father hears that one of his ships has returned and he rides back to see if that is true. On his way home, he is lost in the woods, and he encounters the beast. What was once to be a happy homecoming is now laden with sorrow as he recounts his tale and what the beast wants.

Beauty decides she must be the one to go and with her horse, Greatheart, she sets off into the unknown.

I believe this is my favorite adaptation of the fairy tale I have read thus far. Beauty is an amazing character. She's very strong, and I don't think I would have been able to do what she did. Especially not willingly. She's someone that is easy to admire, yet she's still human. And since I love horses, her relationship with Greatheart was awesome. They really trust each other.

Everything in this story was done really well. I'm pretty sure I could ramble for a fairly long time, but I'll just leave it with this: great story, great characters, great book.

An Interview with Lauren Baratz-Logsted

Today, an interview with Lauren Baratz-Logsted, author of Crazy Beautiful.

Why did you choose to rewrite Beauty and the Beast versus, say, Cinderella or Snow White?

I'd just seen Beauty and the Beast on Broadway and I got to wondering why of all the Disneyfied fairy tales it's the one that's translated best to stage and screen - certainly, it's the one I've enjoyed the most! I decided it's because it's the only one where the male is actually a fully formed character too, more than just mere window dressing for the female. It struck me that it would be fun to try to do a contemorary re-visioning - not a strict re-telling, but rather using the classic as a springboard to say something hopefully fresh about the world we live in now.

What was the writing process for Crazy, Beautiful like?

A lot of fun! I'd never tried to write from the point of view of a boy before, which is what half of Crazy Beautiful is written from, the story told in alternating chapters by Lucius Wolfe and Aurora Belle. The first draft I wrote thinking it was for the middle grade market, with the characters a few years younger than they wound up being in the final version. But then an editor was resistant to the idea of Lucius having hooks for hands - she thought he should have mechanical hands - and while I was doing research that did validate that a double amputee would be more likely to wind up with hooks, it occurred to me that the story would be much more strong and interesting if I made the characters a few years older. Once I began rewriting the thing with the characters a few years older, I saw that it was a good decision: the stakes were so much higher for Lucius and Aurora.

Did you do any research prior to writing Crazy, Beautiful?

I re-watched the movie and read the classic version again - no great hardship as far as research goes!

What are you working on now?

My next novel for teens, and the growing ranks of adults who enjoy teen fiction, is called The Education of Bet, due out in July. It's about a 16-year-old girl in Victorian England who impersonates a boy in order to get a proper education.

Other than Beauty and the Beast, what is your favorite, favorite fairy tale?

I really like Rumpelstiltskin! That said, I'm not sure I do have a favorite. I just love the idea of taking classics or fairy tales and finding new things to say, taking beloved source material and discovering a new angle.

Beastly by Alex Flinn

Beastly is a modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast from the Beast's viewpoint. In this case, Adrain/Kyle. He's used to getting practically everything he's ever wanted. The kind of guy you probably hate, but still somehow wish you could be who he is. And he knows it.

All the girls at school have a crush on him. He uses that fact to his advantage. One night, though, his actions come back to haunt him, proving that karma really can be a bitch. His one solitary good deed on that fateful night garners him a second chance. One that will lead him on an emotional roller coaster like he's never been on.

I confess. I originally picked up this novel because of the upcoming movie. I simply hadn't heard of it before then. While I may be a bit uncertain of the movie, the book was amazing.

Kyle was an intriguing character. He's so arrogant at the beginning of the novel, but even then, he has his weak spots, making him truly human. After the curse, watching him become immersed in classic literature was great. His speech even ended up being affected by it. That was a bit humorous, but since he knew it was a little silly, it turned out to be pretty cool.

The romance in this novel was just right. It's beautiful.

Even though you know basically how this story will end before you begin, Flinn manages to make the fairy tale completely captivating all over again. I recommend.

Bloggiesta Wrap-Up

This Bloggiesta wasn't that successful when I put it up to the previous one. However, I still managed to get a few things done. I finally got some work done for a blog tour I'm working on, I cleared up my inbox a bit, marked books as received on my Bookmooch account (I sometimes forget), and wrote four posts.

Oh, AND I got some Biology schoolwork done! Woot!

Not too bad, not too good. I'll take it.

Once I get a major amount of schoolwork done, I'll be doing my own personal bloggiesta to finish all the things I didn't accomplish this go-round.

What I traded:From Emilee at Penultimate Page, I traded for a lovely ARC of The Dark Divine. I can't wait to get started on this book!

Royally Jacked and Elegance both came from the awesomeness that is Bookmooch. The first sounds cute and the latter sounds fabulous.

What I bought, with a bit of help from gift cards:I'm going straight to the movie gallery on Tuesday to rent the Post Grad movie and because I always like to read the book first, I grabbed a copy of Post Grad. It was pretty cool, in a semi-predictable sort of way.

I've been meaning to read a John Green book, and since my library has his two previous books I picked up Paper Towns.

I saw the trailer of the Dear Johnmovie when I went to see New Moon (That movie had a lot of great previews!), so once again, I wanted to read the book first.

Blue Moon: The Immortals is the second book in the series. Loved the first!

I loved the movie, Marley & Me, and since the book is generally better, plus it was on clearance, I jumped on it! :P

LEFTY Notebook -Where the Right Way to Write is Left is just made of awesome.

Better Late Than Never

Blogging Goals:

Comment more: I did a really good job of this when I was just starting out (If I do say so myself), but lately I've not been doing such an awesome job.

Relax: I'm going to relax and not worry about how often I post. I do intend to join the Bloggiesta this weekend and get a bunch of stuff done, so I won't be so worried about this stack of books that needs to be reviewed. *eyes warily*

Do more editing: I've been looking back over some of my posts, and it's definitely ringing true that hindsight is always the clearest. So, I'm taking a little more time to think over posts.

And most importantly, have fun!

Personal Goals:

Get in shape: I don't think there's every been a time where I've truly been in shape. I've never been interested in sports at the schools I've attended. While I'm not overweight, I'm not in shape, either. I'd like to see how that feels.

Be more open: I'm slow to trust people and kind of shy, so apparently I don't come across as very friendly. This is the one that will probably be the hardest. Be more extroverted! Yeah! =)

2009 Favorites

I'm sure that I've read more books in 2009 than I have in previous years. A lot of them, probably even most, were good, and a few really stood out. Here's some of my favorites.

Most Inspiring: North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley made me contemplate once again about what the word "beautiful" really means. It's a gorgeous story with great characters.

Best Writing:
I came across a bunch of quotes from Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey that I really want to remember. It's a fantastic read, and although it officially doesn't come out in paperback format until January 17, I've seen paperbacks in bookstores, and Amazon has it marked as in stock!

Same Difference by Siobhan Vivian was a lovely story. I loved the setting and the realistic way friendships were depicted.

Most Fun:
Fairies! And theatre! I loved Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev. Full of awesomeness. Perchance to Dream, the second book in the series comes out in May. Six months of more waiting? Sigh.

Most Surprising:What do I mean by surprising? I mean that I was surprised by how much I liked Going Too Farby Jennifer Echols. I think the cover threw me off at first, but once I began reading the story, I absolutely loved it. I'll definitely be looking into more books by this author.

Best Jane Austen Spin-Off:

The Family Fortune by Laurie Horowitz is a modern retelling of Persuasion. I found out about this book when I asked a blogger who pointed me to a post by another blogger. There are so many Pride and Prejudice spin-offs. I was ecstatic to see one for Persuasion and even happier that it was done really well.

Best Historical:

I love historicals. The Luxe by Anna Godbersen was very intriguing, and I kept reading to see if my suspicions were correct. Definitely got my interest within the first chapters.

Most Bizarre:

Days of Little Texas by R.A. Nelson was absolutely bizarre. The mix between religion and the supernatural was fabulous. It wasn't perfect, but it definitely left an imprint on my brain.

Most Addictive:

My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent was completely enrapturing. Turned out to be a very quick read because I couldn't put it down! I had several moments when my heart literally started speeding up because I was so invested on what was going to happen to the characters. The second book in the Soul Screamers series, My Soul to Save, has just recently been released, and I have a copy on its way to me now.

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick was thrilling. Patch rode the very fine line of between being a bad guy and just a regular jerk exceptionally well. Every once in a while I wanted to slap him, but he soon did something to get back on my good side. Amazing.

Most heart-breaking:
I don't remember crying during a single book I read this year, I'm not a very outwardly emotional person, but Under This Unbroken Sky by Shandi Mitchell had me the closest to doing so. It took me a few chapters to get into it, but I soon settled into the rhythm of the story and fell in love. The ending nearly ripped my heart out.

I'm ready for 2010 and all that it has to offer. Bring it on.

2097 is a transformed world. No matter what the truth is, Kellen cares only about one thing--he has to save his father.

The concept of this book is completely intriguing! I wonder how they control how many men are around? I love how this book is set in a time that isn't that far away. Just think, one plague and BOOM. you're gone. Kind of creepy.

This week was slow in quantity but full of awesomeness!

I got a call from the library and picked up a DVD of North & South. It's a BBC mini-series based on the novel by Elizabeth Gaskell. It is awesome. You should find a copy. If you don't believe me, go ask Pirate Penguin.

Then, I got a couple of awesome books from My Friend Amy.
I love the covers on these books! White Picket Fences has such a subtle cover, and Breaking Up Is Hard to Do is so warm. They both sound like fabulous books. Plus, Breaking Up is Christian YA! I'm hoping I enjoy it. I don't see much of it around.

Movie Review: Julie & Julia

If you know me, then you're mostly likely are aware of the fact that I can't cook. At all. As in, the only things I have ever made with any success are cheesecake, brownies, and Ramen noodles. The neccessities of life, of course. My father says that any one who can read can cook, but I think there is a huge distance between cooking and cooking well.

That's why I surprised my self when I picked up Julie & Julia at the local movie rental store. Mainly, I picked it up because of Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. I love them both. And even though I can't cook good food myself, I certainly enjoy it when others do.

I adored this movie. It was fun, and it made me laugh a number of times. The movie alternates between Julia Child's slow rise to fame as a cook in the 1950s and Julie Powell's attempt to cook and blog through the entire Mastering the Art of French Cooking book in one year.

I loved watching the romance between the couples. It was so sweet. The kind that while I watched I was thinking that if I ever did get married, I'd want it to be to a guy like that.

My favorite, favorite part of this movie was listening to Meryl Streep laugh. It has to be one of the most refreshing sounds I've heard in a while, and it just makes you want to jump in and laugh along with her.

Book Review: Nanny Returns by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus

For those who have not read the previous book, this review contains spoilers. Feel free to read my review of The Nanny Diaries instead.

Nanny is back and better than ever! After spending twelve years overseas Nan and her husband, Ryan (formerly known as Harvard Hottie!), return to NYC to establish some roots. After they buy a large home full of "potential" (read: It's basically falling down around them.), Ryan's called off to deal with a grain shortage in The Sudan.

Soon Nan finds herself once again dealing with people who think money can give them anything, a contractor who won't call her, the pressure of a husband who wanted to start a family yesterday, and when he shows up drunk on her doorstep, the now teenage Grayer.

When I heard there was going to be a sequel to The Nanny Diaries, I was ecstatic to see where everyone had ended up. This book did not disappoint in the least. Nan was engaging as ever. Over the years, she has become a bit more mature, which suits her well.

Seeing her still feeling bad for leaving Grayer behind, gave me mixed emotions. On the one hand, I thought it was sweet that she cared about him so much. On the other, I kind of wanted to tell her to get over it already. After all, what else could she have done? When Grayer lands back in her life, it's very intriguing to watch her actions. Will she bow to the "needs" of Mrs. X once again, or will she be able to finally stand?

There was many things going on at once during this novel, keeping it quite lively. Nan's life never seems to slow down, and while she whirled through the rat race of her life, I just had to think that something had to give.

Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus have done it again, bringing Nan and an incredibly entertaining cast of characters to life. This is one book I definitely urge you to pick up.

It's such a cute book, and I've read some really positive reviews. Can you imagine holding a grudge since the second grade? I definitely don't have that much willpower in me. You?

Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell

Molly is seventeen when her father remarries. Her new mother is vain, and her stepsister is quite the character, alluring every man she meets. She and Molly soon become good friends. Molly becomes the go-between for Cynthia and her lovers. This may cause Molly to lose both her reputation and the man she loves.

I loved Molly. She's so unpretentious, and she loves her father very much.

The plot in this book is complicated, so I had to stay focused in order to make sure I didn't miss anything. It's definitely worth it. I wasn't disappointed.

The only thing I was disappointed in with this book is that the author died before it was finished. Although we don't get the exact ending, you do get a pretty good feel of where the story was headed, so you're not left hanging.

Although North and South still remains my Gaskell favorite, this book is certainly a worthwhile read.

I hope you all have a completely fabulous holiday season. Mine will be a bit quiet this year. We're actually planning on going out of town for Christmas, which will be a first. Haven't quite decided where we'll be going, but we'll most likely be staying in Florida. My parents, me, and the road. Should be interesting, no?

First off, Crazy Beautiful by Lauren Baratz Logsted. I bought this book off of amazon for the Beauty and the Beast week coming up in January. More on that later. ;)

An ARC of Brightly Woven by Alexandra Bracken came as part of the One ARC Tours. Excited! I’ve heard plenty of great things.

Ripped at the Seams by Nancy Krulik I received from Bookmooch. Although I'm not a fan of the cover, it sounds like a cute book!

The Shack by Wm. Paul Young I read during the Read. Read. Read-A-Thon. My review should be coming up soon. For now, a one word summary: interesting.

Ready to Rock

I'm home! The service went off really well, and afterwards some girls wanted to practice "O Holy Night" for the offertory tomorrow. It took up some extra time, but it sounds pretty good, if I do say so myself.

I've spent about twenty minutes reading The Shack thus far, and I'm not really getting into it. A friend lent it to me, claiming its awesomeness, so I'll keep on reading and hope for something that really grabs me.

In other news, you know that parade I was going to? It was on Thursday. When in heck has a town ever had its parade on a school night?? Oh well, that just means I'll have more time to read. =)

Read. Read. Read-A-Thon

Two weeks ago, my plan for the Read. Read. READ-A-THON. was to read for at least 15 hours. Now... Not so much.

I play the piano on Sunday mornings for a local church. However, today, they are having their annual Old Folks' Day, for old folks. It's basically a reunion type of thing, and I'll be playing a few songs for that, then lunch afterwards.

Then in the evening, I'll be going to a nearby towns annual Christmas parade. I haven't gone to a parade in two years, so I thought it would be fun to go.

Somewhere, between all of this, I'm hoping to be getting at least five hours of reading in, and at least one update post as well as (hopefully) a wrap-up post. We'll see how that works out, shall we?

Shopaholic and Baby by Sophie Kinsella

Have you ever shook your head at someone and wondered in despair if they'd ever learn? That's how I feel about Becky Brandon sometimes. However, if she didn't get herself into messes, she wouldn't be Becky, and I probably wouldn't love her nearly as much. I won't get into details, so I can stay away from spoilers, but it's safe to say that Becky is up to her same old antics and more.

It's been awhile since I read the last Shopaholic book, and it was really fun to dive back into this world. The climax in this book was completely hilarious. As in, I-really-can't-stop-laughing hilarious.

Throughout all the Shopaholic books, my favorite character has been Suzy, and this book was no different. Danny also shows up in this novel, and he was wonderful. I loved his t-shirt. The slogan was awesome! Actually, I'm pretty sure I loved everyone in this book, even the villains.

Sophie Kinsella has created yet another fabulous book in this adorable series. For those of you who have read the previous books, this Shopaholic & Baby* is a great continuation. If you haven't, you should most definitely get started with Confessions of a Shopaholic*. It's magnificent.

How about some great news? If you look on Kinsella's Official Website, she says that she's working on a new Shopaholic book! Woot! (I'm excited! Can you tell?!)

WoW: My Dearest Mr. Darcy by Sharon Lathan

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

A most untraditional love story, this is the celebrated tale of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who involuntarily travels through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare's passionate affair endures across a sea of time and captures them in an impossibly romantic trap that tests the strength of fate and basks in the bonds of love.

I decided to use the summary on the back cover for this review because it makes far more sense than anything I was able to come up with. The Time Traveler's Wife* has a very complicated story line, and that's one of the reasons I enjoyed it. I really liked the way the story was split between Henry and Clare's point of view. Once I fell into the rhythm of it, it was easy to follow, and it allows the reader to see things a little more clearly. However, there was one instance where things got so complicated that I still haven't been able to figure it out. I've read over the wedding a couple of times, yet I still haven't figured out what was going on.

There was only thing that caused me any major annoyance in this book and, it only lasted for about a page. Claire is having trouble conceiving, and one night Henry brings up the subject of adoption. Claire immediately shoots that option down, saying, "But that would be fake. It would be pretending." It really irritates me when people view adoption this way. It IS possible to love an adopted child just as much as your own biological children.

One thing in this novel that had me laughing every time I thought about it was Henry being a librarian. He definitely tore down the stereotype of librarians being older and boring. Think of what it could be like to work with a guy who's young, handsome, and is occasionally found running through the stacks naked. Of course, he only does that because he carries nothing but his body when he time travels, but you wouldn't know that! That would be completely awkward.

Another specific thing I enjoyed in this novel was the bit of scientific explanation of time travel we are shown. In the few time travel novels I have read, most of the time the reader is supposed to completely suspend belief. In this novel, however, Niffenegger at least shows a possibility of why it could happen. And after all, is anything completely impossible?

Overall, I found this novel to be a pretty good read. It didn't wow me as it did some, but I did enjoy it very much. I'm very excited to see this book's screen adaptation. For those of you who have seen it, did it do this book justice?

Three Rivers Rising by Jame Richards

Told through multiple narrators, this book tells the story of how one flood, on one day, changed the course of people's lives forever.

The character that is introduced first and whose voice we hear most is Celestia. She comes from a successful family yet finds herself in love with another voice we hear, Peter, a working boy at South Fork Fishing and hunting club. This is where several of the high socialites go during the summer. Celestia's decision concerning this relationship will either tear her family apart, or draw them closer together.

I had never even heard of the Johnstown Flood prior to reading this novel. Since I love learning about history, that was a welcome bonus.

Three Rivers Rising reads very quickly since it is written in poems. I've only read one other book written this way. The more I read books written in such a way, the more I like them. Richard's writing in this book is clear, and the imagery is great. It is so easy to imagine how everything happened. The new voices in this story are added in such a way that makes the stories flow together evenly, like two rivers joining.

This book will be released on April 13, 2010 and was reviewed as part of One ARC Tours.

An Assembly Such as This by Pamela Aiden is a book that has been recommended to me a lot! This is the first book in the trilogy, and I have the last, so now all I need is the middle.

Early Christmas presents:

Mirror With a Memory is a book about the history of Canada. I (sadly) know nothing about Canada, so I think this will be a fun way to get educated. It has gorgeous pictures!

The Nanny Diaries starring Scarlett Johansson

I hope you all had a lovely day yesterday. As I said earlier in the week, I now have a review of The Nanny Diaries movie!

Annie has just graduated from college, and is ready to embark upon life. She gets an interview which will give her an opportunity to snag the perfect job. But when she is asked, "Who is Annie Braddock?" She really doesn't know the answer to that question. Determined to discover herself, through a few hilarious turns, she becomes a nanny for Mrs. X. It seems like an easy enough job to her. If only she knew!

This movie was a lot of fun, filled with both hilarious and sweet moments. It actually resolved my biggest irk with the book by giving most of the characters actual names, although you don't necessarily get to know them right away. The biggest change, in my opinion, from novel to screen is that instead of Annie being an experienced nanny, she's learning on the job! It was so much fun to watch.

The only thing I didn't absolutely love in this movie were the times when Annie grabbed onto a red umbrella and went up into the sky. I think it was supposed to give a magical Mary Poppins type feel to the movie, but I just thought it was odd.

I liked the ending to this movie much better than that of the book. It just solved everything the way I had hoped for. The Nanny Diaries* is one of those feel good coming of age stories that I think a lot of people will love.

Black Friday is here, yet again. Although I'm still at home in my pajamas and an old sweatshirt, I'm still hoping to get the majority of my Christmas shopping done today. I'm going to be buying books for the majority of my friends and relatives, and Amazon has some amazing Black Friday Deals for books. I definitely recommend going to check it out.

I'm thinking about buying a boxed set of The Sisterhood of The Traveling Pants for my cousin and maybe a book about cakes for my mother. Amazon has deals on just about everything this weekend, so be sure to check it out!

WoW: Sea

During her stay at the orphanage, she meets scarred and soulful Deni who is more like Sea than anyone she has ever met.

She knows they can't be together, so why can't she stay away from him? And what about her old-best-friend-turned-suddenly-hot Spider who may or may not be waiting for her back home? And why is her psychiatrist father so secretive about her mother's plane crash? The farther she gets from home, the closer she comes to the truth. And Sea's real adventure begins.

Ah, the classic guy you want but can't have. I first heard of Sea* after I started following Heidi R. Kling's twitter. She's a tenner! I think it sounds like a very interesting book, especially the setting. I've never read any books in post-tsunami Indonesia. I also like the simplicity of the title. If I were to see this in a bookstore, that and the cover would definitely pull me in to find out more about the book. It won't be released until June 10, 2010, so it's a bit of a long wait, but I think it will be worth it.

Nanny has been through the routine of nannying several times. When she meets Mrs. X, it first appears that she's slightly different than the women Nanny's worked for before. All too soon, she learns that Mrs. X is different all right, she's worse! Nanny wants her life back, but how can she leave Grayer, the young child she's come to love?

The first few chapters of this book confused the heck out of me. I kept searching for the characters' names, but it turns out that that Nanny is really just Nanny, and Mrs. X is really Mrs. X. Oh, and you can't forget Harvard Hottie. The name's irked me throughout the entire book, and I found myself making up name's for them just to keep myself placated.

However, other than that, I really enjoyed The Nanny Diaries! Nanny's character is a lot of fun. She knows that it's a continuous cycle and she needs to get out, but how can she possibly leave such a cute kid? I was rooting for her and Harvard Hottie the entire time. And Mrs. X is the perfect villain. Whenever I pictured her, I thought of Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmations. Remember her?

IMM: Another Great Week

In My Mailbox is hosted by The Story Siren. This week was another great week of books, for me.

First off, some awesome Sea swag from Heidi R. Kling. She put out a call on Twitter for those who wanted some. I saw a tweet that said she might be doing it again, so be sure to follow her!

I bought Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell. I was originally planning on borrowing it from my library, but they didn't have it! In fact, they didn't have anything by Gaskell at all. Anyway, I'm going to be a part of The Classics Circuit tour for this author. It will be very cool.

These three books I received from Yan at Books By Their Cover. I love the cover of After Ever After by Jordan Sonnenblick, and I've been wanting to read Hate List by Jennifer Brown and Evermore by Alyson Noel ever since I found out about their existences.

Finally, I took a trip to my library and picked up copies of The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold and Beauty by Robin McKinley. They both sound really, really good.

Things I've Learned About Library Sales

Over the past few months I've been to a few library sales. It's great to be able to pick up some awesome books for really low prices while simultaneously support libraries. I've noticed four things in my limited experience, and I thought I'd share them with you.

There will either be somone in front of you...

The sales I've been to line up the books in rows on long tables. No matter where I went there was always someone in front of me, and one of two things usually happened:

1) They went extremely slow. As in ceremoniously checking each book. I'm the type that's itching to get ahead because as I'm standing there waiting, a book I may want is being snatched away before I even lay my eyes on it.

2) I'd see a book I wanted being taken by the person right in front of me. The agony!

...Or someone behind you.

A couple times someone would come up behind me, and it would go something like this:

They'd look at the books directly in front of them. They'd look at the books in front of me. They would bore holes into my back willing me to move faster, but I couldn't because I was trying to make a decision of whether I wanted a particular book. This was important! A combination of heavy sighing, box-in-arms shifting, and shifting of feet would commence.

By this time, I've generally got the point, and I'm moving to get out of the way as fast as possible.

There will always be that one book.

At every sale I've been to, I've always ended up seeing at least one book I wanted in someone elses hands. It's almost inevitable! One time, this person had a book that I'd been looking for for a few months. If I wasn't so shy, it definitely would have turned into a showdown. xD

It will always be fun!

I've had a lot of fun at book sales this past year, and I can't wait for my local library sales next year. There hasn't been a single time that I've walked out with less than ten books.

I first heard about Anxious Hearts* in a Books to Pine for post at The Story Siren. I thought the cover was lovely, so I googled for a summary. From the summary, I think the cover fits the book perfectly, as it has a dreamy quality to it. It seems like a gorgeous love story. This book comes out from Amulet Books on May 1, 2010. It's a bit of a long wait, but from the sound of the book, it'll be worth it! What do you think?

Same Difference by Siobhan Vivian

Emily's life is pretty ordinary. She lives a privileged life in a gated community, with her best friend forever living right next to her. The majority of her summers have been spent lying and getting a tan with her friend, Meg, or going down to the very nearby Starbucks, where they always order the same things, but this summer is going to be a little different. She's heading into Philadelphia to pursue her new found love of art at a college that's having a summer art institute. While there, she discovers a whole new way to look at life, and suddenly her regular life doesn't seem that good anymore. But eventually she learns that her new life isn't perfect. She's split between two worlds, and she doesn't know if she can hang on to both.

Same Difference was a great book! I loved the title, writing, characters, and plot. What more can a reader ask for?

A particular plot point I enjoyed was watching Meg and Emily's relationship. They've been best friends for a really long time. Both of them go through a lot of growing pains through the summer. Emily's only at the art institute three days a week, so I actually got to see the character's struggle with each other as they try to keep their friendship together as they grow into the adults they will become.

Watching Emily blossom as an artist was also really cool. I have basically no artistic ability when it comes to painting or drawing, so reading about someone who is was a lot of fun.

This book is a wonderful coming of age story. It hosts a wonderful cast of characters who constantly surprised me. I definitely recommend you read Same Difference*.

A Walk to Remember directed by Adam Shankman

A couple weeks ago, I reviewed A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks. Today, I'm back with a review of the movie starring Shane West and Mandy Moore.

Landon Carter's friends aren't exactly what you'd call model citizens. One night, some one's looking to join their group. In order to do so, he'll have to complete a dare of their choice. Instead of just giving the guy a good fright, the dare goes wrong, and he ends up getting hurt. Police cars are soon sounding, and all but Landon split immediately. He stays behind to make sure the guy's not too badly hurt and ends up getting busted by the police. Now he's stuck doing volunteer work and acting in the school's annual play opposite Jamie Sullivan, the preacher's daughter. He thinks he knows everything about her, after all they've gone to the same school for twelve years, but he'll soon learn he was wrong. There's a lot more to Jamie than meets the eye, and there might be a lot more to Landon as well.

I enjoyed this movie at least as much as I enjoyed the book, maybe even more so. I'm one of those people who can watch movies over and over again. I think I've watched this one at least seven times, maybe more. It's the perfect chick flick. Landon's a bad guy, but not too bad, while Jamie's the seemingly perfect girl who is a lot more than what appears on the surface.

In one of my viewings of the movie, I listened to the Adam Shankman/Mandy Moore/Shane West's commentary. Something the director said made the movie make a bit more sense. The book is pretty religious, but the movie is hardly contains any religious elements at all. The director said something to the effect that this movie while containing Christian morals, wasn't a Christian movie. That helped me clear up a bit of my confusion concerning the lack of religious elements.

Overall, I thought A Walk to Remember* was really sweet. It has me looking for more movies with these actors. I liked them a lot.

IMM: Cool Stuff

This week, I received some things that I couldn't find pictures for, so I took my own. Let's just jump into it, shall we?

First off, I took a trip to my library. It was one of those times when I didn't have anything particular in mind, but I was sure I would walk out with something. I was right!

Room With a View is based on a novel by E.M. Forster, whose work I have never read. I watched this movie last night, and I'm really excited to read the book. The characters appear to be very complex.
Beastly by Alex Flinn is an adaption of the classic Beauty and The Beast tale. This particular novel is being made into a movie! I heard about this a couple months ago at Persnickety Snark.
Defying Gravity has absolutely sealed me as a Keith Urban fan. I've been listening to it at least once every day.

I received The Book Thief as a prize for a survey I did on Teenreads.com. I know this book is popular, but I actually haven't talked to anyone who has read it. If you have, what did you think of it?

The "got passion?" bumper sticker I picked up at a small bookstore/music store. I thought it was cool.

Lisa Schroeder, author of Chasing Brooklyn, I Heart You, You Haunt Me, and Far from You sent me fifteen Chasing Brooklyn bookmarks after I won a contest on her blog. I gave the majority of them to my library and a couple to my friends. So pretty!

Finally, I received some awesome stuff from a contest I won at TomDolby.com. I have a copy of Secret Society, and I'm really excited to read it. Do you know how to put on a temporary tattoo? I've never done it before, and I don't want to do it incorrectly. xD

Slept Away by Julie Kraut

Laney Parker wasn't sure what she wanted to do for the summer. One thing that definitely wasn't on her list was summer camp, but that's exactly where she's headed, thanks to her mother. Laney is off for six weeks of living in an unair-conditioned cabin with one overly peppy counselor and a few cabin mates would probably rather have her disappear. How will she manage to survive?

I've always loved summer camp. Every once in a while there's someone who lets it be known by their attitude and actions that they would rather be anywhere else... Someone like Laney. During the time where she was whining about being stuck at camp, which was pretty often, she was intensely annoying. However, when her mind was on something else I actually ended up liking her. I can say one thing for sure. She is very, very melodramatic.

Seeing camp through her eyes was interesting, to say the least.

My favorite character in the book would have to by Laney's best friend. You don't get to see much of her since she stays in NYC, but from what I did see, she seemed to be the model socialite. Plus, she spends the summer recovering from a nose job she had. I didn't know that it was even legal to have that type of surgery done before you were eighteen, like a tattoo. I would have liked to see a bit more of her.

Overall, Slept Away* was a pretty cool read, despite its rather annoying protagonist. I think that Julie Kraut's book will appeal to those looking for a quick, summery type read. I think that that reading this book will help you get into a summery mood, even as the weather grows colder.

When the Whistle Blows by Fran Cannon Slayton

Jimmy Cannon has always known what he plans to do with his life. He'll work on the railroad. It's in his blood, just as it is in his brothers' and his father's. He doesn't understand why his father discourages this. He's silly to think that trains will ever go out of style. They'll be around forever!

I really enjoyed this story and consumed it within a few hours. Jimmy's a lot of fun to listen to. It seemed as if he had the classic small town American childhood. He lives in a home with both of his parents and his older brothers, until they move out when they come of age, and he spends the majority of his time fooling around with his group of friends that he's probably known for almost all of his life.

It was interesting to watch Jimmy's relationship with his father, a man he doesn't understand. They were by far the two most captivating characters in this book. Things got really interesting when Jimmy started trying to figure out exactly who his father was.

When the Whistle Blows has a lot of fun stories, from throwing cabbages at a car to Jimmy's championship football game, but at its heart it's a heartwarming story of a boy and his father, as well as a boy's journey to becoming a man.

This book has been reviewed as a part of a Traveling to Teens tour.

I love the summary of this book! It makes the book sound, well... Beautiful. I think what I like best about it is that although it sounds like Connelly and Jeremy will have a romantic future to gether, it starts out as friendship. That's lovely.

The Beautiful Between* will be released on May 11, 2010 from Knopf Books for Young Readers. It will be Alyssa B. Schienmel's debut novel.
